“8th Grade Career Day” Girls to Women/Women to Girls (G2W)

Columbine Moving & Storage has volunteered our moving and storage expertise for the last 13 years in helping the Aspen Youth Center and the Roaring Fork Family Resource Center with 8th Grade Career Day. The Coordinating Committee, comprised of volunteers from all walks of life in the valley, in collaboration with Aspen Youth Center and the Roaring Fork Family Resource Center came together for the 13th annual 8th Grade Career Day/Girls to Women/Women to Girls.(G2W) On April 12th & 19th, 2012, approximately 275 8th grade girls were transported by school bus from 9 schools in Aspen & the Roaring Fork Valley for a day filled with activities geared to introduce them to the many avenues available to them as women. Approximately 50 women and 20 high school girls volunteered their time to work with the girls.

The day is designed to expose the 8th grade girls to the many career opportunities available to them. In the morning, the girls had an opportunity to meet with over 50 women from a variety of careers, learning about their occupations and the preparation needed for those careers. The afternoon was spent on activities designed for adolescent girls. They played a personal finance game titled “Reality Bytes: Personal Finance in the Real World.” Next, the high school girls from the various high schools in the valley facilitated a panel discussion titled, “What to Expect in High School.” At the end of the day, each girl received a goody bag filled with goodies that businesses in the valley had donated. Columbine facilitated storing these goodies and moving them on the day of the event.
