While everyone’s timeline for moving will look a little bit different, here is a timeline for the basics. This should help you organize your time and efforts and help you to not forget anything small that most people do not think about.
10-weeks prior to move:
1. Set your date for moving, be sure to get yourself a couple days on each end for any snafu’s that should arise.
2. Research moving companies. Ask family, friends, and neighbors.
3. Get a couple different estimates from your top two or three moving companies.
8-weeks prior to move:
1. Choose your moving company from the estimate and reviews your have received.
2. Buy packing materials. Moving companies usually have new and used materials at the discounted price.
3. Go through items your want to give away or sell.
4. Get paperwork together for school enrollment, driver’s license, or passport.
6-weeks prior to move:
1. Hold a yard sale and then donate what is left over.
2. Sign your contract with your moving company.
3. Pack items that are not your ‘everyday’ items.
4-weeks prior to move:
1. Fill out change of address paperwork with post office.
2. Contact banks, subscriptions, doctors, and insurance companies about your change of address.
3. Schedule any maintenance needed for the house to sell.
1-week prior to move:
1. Confirm moving date and times with moving company.
2. Pack rest of items and a suitcase for a couple days.
3. Do a final walkthrough to make sure everything is ready.
