You have a child off to college in the fall. It is time when you have to start accumulating the things that your child may need for their college dorm or apartment. Here is a list of ideas that we at Columbine Moving & Storage have learned for packing and moving a college student.
Make a list of what your student might need. Many colleges have detailed information on their housing. In these lists they give the student ideas on what to bring, what furniture is provided such as bed size, dresser, and desk in the dorm rooms or apartments. Listed below are links to housing information for several colleges in Colorado. Looking at these will provide you with the information of what specific information you need and what is necessary.

- Keep yourself organized by designating a place in your garage or another part of the house with the items your child wants to take to school. You already may have items that were received from graduation that are ready to go. Continue adding to this pile.
- “Take Less, Not More”. Remember your child will most likely have to move each year during their college years and each year more things are accumulated. Moving is hard work. Once they get to their new digs, they will get a better idea of what they might need.
- This is a good time to de-clutter. If you haven’t worn an item in a copy of years, it is probably a good time to donate or throw these items away. Storage space in college housing can be limited so you don’t want to waste that space on items that you will never wear. As you go through your room, make three piles: donate, trash, and college.
- Only buy items that are necessary, so check the college list carefully. Some college dorm rooms have room for under bed tubs others may not, some colleges may provide a vacuum and others not.
- Pack your items in boxes that you can handle yourself if you are doing the moving yourself. Those dorms and apartments can have stairs, long hallways, and it could be a long distance from the parking lot. Consider purchasing a small dolly, it will save your back.
- Last but not least, save your boxes and put them under your bed. At the end of the year when you have to move out of that dorm or apartment, you can get started packing right away.
