I recently read an article about “Sing for Hope Pianos” in Simple Magazine and it got my interest up on how all these pianos were moved and what the whole event was about. “Sing for Hope Pianos” event has partnered with Camel Piano Moving www.camelpianomoving.com who has done all their moving of pianos for these events. The whole event is very inspiring.
From June 1st to June 16th, upright and grand pianos will be moved to five different boroughs, using parks and public spaces throughout New York City. There are 88 pianos (one for each key on a piano) that have been painted by artists of their own design. Each of the pianos has a “piano buddy” throughout the time it resides in each spot for the 16 days. The “piano buddies” cover the piano during inclement weather and also supervise. Anyone can sit at the pianos and strike up a ditty to their liking. There are also daily spontaneous concerts that artists perform in their quest of uniting neighborhoods within the city.
After the event is finished, the pianos are donated to local schools in need, healthcare facilities, and community organizations. “Sing for Hope Pianos” artists continue to inspire appreciation of music and art through these pianos by teaching classes, giving performances, and workshops.
“Sing for Hope Pianos” is supported by Chobani, Inc. Both these organizations’ mission is to provide for all through arts volunteerism and transform communities in need.
If you are in New York City during this time, and want to engage in this event, go to www.singforhope.org to get a map of where the pianos are staged and join in the fun. If you are in Western Colorado and need a piano moved, give us a call!
