Vintage Gilbert & Barker Self Measuring Gas Pump

Columbine Moving & Storage in Aspen and Eagle, Colorado has professional storage services and we have stored some very interesting items during its 34 years of business. One of the items stored at this time is a Gilbert & Barker self- measuring gasoline pump.

This model #176 (second version) was built in 1926 by Gilbert & Barker Manufacturing Company in Springfield, MA. “Gas Pump Johnny” restored the gas pump. Charles Gilbert & John Barker came together in 1865 and built the “Springfield Gas Machine”.  This machine converted crude petroleum distillates into a gas vapor which was used to light buildings.  In 1870, their partnership was incorporated. They continued on to design and manufacture the first petroleum pump called the T-1.  It used a push-pull motion to draw gas from an underground tank.  The next year they introduced the first measuring gasoline pump.  In 1935, G & B started using the name of ‘Gilbarco” and it was registered as their trademark.  In 2002, the company was acquired by Danaher Corporation and now goes under the name Gilbarco Veeder-Root. “Gilbarco Veeder-Root is the global leader of integrated technology solutions in the retail petroleum industry.”

They produce state of the art gas pumps and point of sale management systems at convenience stores and much, much more.  The next time you get gas, look down on the side of the pump.  The name most likely will be Gilbarco!
