What is a Small Household Goods Shipment?

A small household goods shipment in the moving and storage business is considered between 1000 pounds to 5000 pounds. These types of shipments are generally picked up by Columbine Moving & Storage, the local agent in in the Roaring Fork Valley and Vail Valley, in our 24 foot moving trucks. There are several reasons why the semi-truck will not or cannot pick these shipments up direct from the residence.

  1. It is easier for the large semi-trucks to load shipments from the local warehouse.
  2. The cost for the semi-truck driver will be lower than loading at the residence. Since these shipments are low in poundage, there revenue is not as much. Loading at the warehouse will help the driver keep his expenses to a minimum.
  3. Because of our area of the country, it can be very difficult for semi-trucks to access the residence due to bad weather, snow, ice, and many times the driveways are very steep and narrow.
  4. Typically, on the smaller loads, there is a three to ten day “window” for the pick-up, and many customers can’t or won’t wait over that time period. By bringing these shipments to the warehouse, it helps the customer meet their moving schedule, by setting an exact date for the pick-up. Many customers must have their goods out of the house on a certain date, so as a local agent we can set up a specific date and time.
  5. Columbine Moving & Storage will accumulate several shipments on the floor of our warehouse shipping to all parts of the country. We recently had 5 shipments ready for drivers, 1000 lbs. to New York, 1200 lbs. to Los Angeles, 1000lbs to New Jersey, 1700lbs to Chicago, and 1000lbs to Houston.
